Department overview

Department of Sports Biochemistry was introduced in the year of 1983 as a part of Faculty of Sports Sciences, NSNIS Patiala. Since then, the department is working towards providing scientific support to national and international level athletes as well as educating coaches & athletes regarding importance of sports Biochemistry.

Main Focus

  • To Test biochemical parameters of National camp, NCOE,TOPS,KI and STC athletes through periodic testing
  • To identify deficiencies related issues & collaboration with other sports science departments and provide follow up services to athletes of various discipline.
  • To prepare periodic testing schedule for Athletes and monitor their health status.
  • To provide Academic support in smooth conduction of various academic courses conducted by NSNIS, Patiala
  • To conduct research in the area of Sports Biochemistry
  • To Create Awareness about importance of biochemical testing for the athletes

Academic activities

  • Diploma in Sports Coaching
  • Master in Sports Coaching
  • Six Weeks Certificate Course in Sports Coaching
  • Skill Development Courses
  • Refresher Courses
  • Orientation Courses

Testing parameters

Biochemical Testing

Biochemical testing is the foundation stone of finding any underlying biochemical related issues among the athletes. For this purpose, department works in integration with other sports science departments. Discussion with coaches and support staff is also a key feature to identify any Biochemical and recovery related issue among athletes.

In this lab we perform vast parameter testing for the finding any deficiency in athletes which are hindering their performance.

We basically perform

  • Heamotological Analysis (complete Blood Count)
  • Hormonal Assays (Testosterone, Cortisol, T3,T4,TSH,)
  • Electrolyte Assays (Sodium, Potassium,Chloride)

Biochemical Analysis

  • Iron Profile
  • Lipid profile
  • Liver function tests
  • Kidney Function Test
  • Muscle Enzymes Creatine Kinase& Lactate dehydrogenase
  • Vitamins (Vitamin D, Vitamin B12 and Folic acid)
  • Minerals (Calcium, Phosphate and Magnesium)

Follow up is quite important for compliance and to monitor progress. Monitoring during regular intervals for biochemical assessment as per the Protocols.

Scientific Support to athletes

Assessing around 1500 samples per year to support athletes from

  • National Camps
  • NCOE
  • STC
  • Khelo India
  • TOPS schemes

Discussion of test reports with coaches & athletes and provision of detailed biochemical reports to Sports nutrition and Sports Medicine and Strength and Conditioning departments for required intervention and treatments and amendments in the training programs.
