Department overview

Department of Sports Psychology was introduced in the year of 1983 as a part of Faculty of Sports Sciences, NSNIS Patiala. Sports Psychology looks at how physical activity and mental well being intersect. Sports Psychologists help athletes maintain high level of performance by prioritizing mental fitness. They also look at sports participation in relation to skills like teamwork and emotional regulation. In the recent year department has launched One year Post Graduate Course in Sports Psychology in collaboration with Punjabi University, Patiala.

Main Focus

  • To assess psychological status of National camp and NCOE athletes through periodic testing
  • To identify psychological related issues in integration with other sports science departments and provide psychological counseling and follow up services to athletes of National camp and NCOE
  • To conduct Psychometric and equipment based Assessment for athletes and psychological support provided on demand. Find Athletes mental barriers through results of the assessments.
  • To provide support in running various academic courses conducted by NSNIS, Patiala
  • To conduct research in the area of Sports Psychology development
  • To provide the awareness regarding the psychological parameters through sessions (Individual as well as Group sessions)
  • Academic activities

    Department has launched One year PG Diploma in Sports Psychology in collaboration with Punjabi University from the academic session 2023-24.

    Testing parameters

    Psychological Testing, counseling and follow up

    Psychological assessments of various TOPS scheme, NCOE disciplines, National Camps and STC inmates are done in lab and on fields according to the protocols of Khelo India. Data analysis and report making are discussed with the players and coaches. Counselling sessions and various interventions done according to the testing results and requirement of the athlete. Counseling sessions perform a range of investigations such as competitive anxiety, mental toughness, biofeedback mechanisms, reaction time, sensomotor coordination, perception and attention functions, time-movement anticipation.
    Follow up is quite important for compliance and to monitor progress. Monitoring during follow ups is done through general discussion and field observation.
