Department overview

Department of Sports Medicine has been providing medical and health care services and round the clock emergency services to athletes of various disciplines training at NSNIS Patiala. It also provides medical services to staff of NIS and their dependants.


Structure of the Department

Activities of the department

  • Emergency medical care – during international and national championships, selection trials and other competitions held in NIS.
  • Periodic health evaluation of athletes –
    • Assessment and monitoring of medical fitness of athletes
    • Early detection of risk and prevention of injuries

Research Activities

  • Screening for Relative energy deficiency in Sports.
  • ECG monitoring in Indian Athletes.
  • Injury Surveillance during training and competitions.
  • Nutritional deficiencies in athletes.
  • Core stability patterns in different sports.
  • Academics
    • Conducts DSM course in collaboration with Govt medical college, Patiala
    • Teaching sports medicine subject to MSC sports coaching students, Diploma trainees, refreshers courses, certificate courses and various skill development courses including massage course and advanced massage courses.
  • Monitoring Sports Medicine center programs
    • Athletes Health promotion and education program.
    • Infections and illness prevention program.
  • Management of sports injury cases referred from peripheral centres and referrals to higher centres for arthroscopies.
  • Athletes Health Promotion activities
    • Including anti doping awareness.
    • Counseling regarding use of nutritional supplements.
    • Psychological counseling during injury rehabilitation.
  • Sport injury management – Assessment, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of athletes in NIS Patiala.
  • Investigations for sports injuries
    • Digital X-Rays.
    • Routine clinical blood and urine investigations.
    • Physiotherapy and rehabilitation services for injured athletes
    • Massage services for athletes recovery
  • Administrative work – in the form of procurement of medicines and physiotherapy items, Maintenance of medical store and pharmacy
